Misconception #8 – Forgetting about a Certificate of Occupancy
Aside from some redecorating (new carpet, paint the walls, replace damaged ceiling tiles), you have found the perfect suite to move into. No need to deal with your local friendly code official, right? Wrong!
Here's why:
- You are still required to obtain a certificate of occupancy for the space. This will typically require a drawing showing the limits of the suite.
- If you are going to move in office cubicles, better show them, too. They can affect travel paths and clearances.
- If you are changing the occupancy use of the space, such as converting a retail space to offices, then your drawing will need to demonstrate compliance to the current building code.
